The reason they want you to go into this book “blind” is because you wouldn’t buy it otherwise. If you like the “f” word on nearly every page and the “p” word for the female genitalia and dragging the “secret” on and on and on then you’ll love this book. There should at least be a warning for the language, beware! Maybe it’s just not my style, but I don’t even care why she hides in the closet every time it rains.....I don’t care! I’m on page 136 and I just can’t go any further. I has a good story line “I think” but getting to the conclusion is just too aggravating and annoying! This is geared toward 20 yr old females and I’m way passed that. I only gave it one star cause I had to. When Ashes Fall edition by Marni Mann Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
"I told you once that you were in my life for only two seconds when I knew I loved you."
When Ashes Fall is Marni Mann's latest standalone. It's set in Boston like many of her other books, and she sets the scene perfectly. I really want to go to Boston! This book is fresh with brand new characters, and, to me, the definition of contemporary romance.
Alix is living day to day but not really living, more like existing. She goes through the motions of her life just trying to make it to the next day. She's a paramedic, a true life saver. A chance encounter with a patient throws her into a friendship and relationship with Smith. She doesn't know how to navigate the new territory without muddying up her past and present.
"No, I don't want to run. Unless it's toward you..."
It's taken me a couple of weeks to get my review in order. I had a hard time trying to convey my feelings for this book because they were so profound! When Ashes Fall is the book to read this year, and you need to go in blind! There aren't many books I recommend reading without looking at reviews or the blurb, but this is 100% one of them. You will laugh, you will cry (a lot, I did), you will swoon. You will find yourself turning the page because you really don't know where this story is going to go. Marni Mann is a master storyteller, and When Ashes Fall is absolutely a 2019 favorite and a true 6-star read.
Starting out 2019 with this book was a bit devastating for me. It is definitely going in my 'best of' pile for 2019 and this year just started. This story was so different than I'm used to reading from this author. What a surprise!
This was a fabulous story as much as the content will allow me to say that, because it also broke my heart. There's so much mystery and intrigue, angst and tension. The books is written from three perspectives and in past and present situations. It's one of those books that you want to flip to the end to know what's going on because you know the author is leading you down a path to discovery, a path you want to run to the end just to know. But I rode out the storm and ended up with an absolutely stunning yet agonizing story.
"No, I don't want to run. Unless it's toward you, and then the answer is yes."
Because this story is full of surprise and mystery, it's best to go in without too much knowledge about the story. This is definitely a story full of pain and sorrow but bursting with love. True to any romance, there is still angst and love encounters that leave you tingly and breathless. But the end will leave you reeling. I cried my eyes out; full on sob fest here. A love so beautifully heartbreaking.
When Ashes Fall is one of the best books of 2019 that you will spend time with. I cannot recommend this book enough.
So I must start off by saying I really thought the book was going to be something completely different and this is probably why I'm on the fence. There is nothing wrong with the book. The writing was great and characters good but I wasn't looking to read a book like this so it just wasn't for me. Once I started I knew where it was headed and actually didn't feel like continuing because I just wasn't in the mood for this. So this review is not as objective as I would have liked it to be. Maybe if I knew a little more of what the book would be about and wasn't eluded to something else I would have read it at a time I was in the mood for it and rated it much higher.
First off, the overall writing was good. Nothing was wrong with that. The reason for my low rating was for the book as a whole. I was looking forward to this book from Marni and hit the pre-order button as soon as it was available. Then it downloaded on my kindle. I read it and was highly disappointed. It wasn’t what I expected at all. I mean sort of knew what the book was going to be about but the delivery of it was so disappointing. You have Alix, Dylan, and Smith.
Dylan is/was a rich, arrogant ass that took up way too much of the book in my opinion. He’s dead. Leave him dead. Even if he was still alive, I don’t think he would’ve been that likable.
Alix is still very hung up on Dylan. Even when she was with Smith, she was all about Dylan first. Dylan always came first. He’a dead! Again, leave him dead! I get that she’s still “grieving” over him but Smith deserved better.
Then you have Smith. Very considerate. Very patient with Alix and her issues even though he has no idea what her issues are.
The whole book was mostly about Alix and Dylan, the dead, arrogant ass whom I would’ve disliked as a hero. Smith was just sort of like an afterthought. Someone that was thrown into the book so that there was a “happy ending.” But honestly, Alix doesn’t deserve Smith. He is way too good for her. I’m not even sure how or why he fell in love with her.
The reason they want you to go into this book “blind” is because you wouldn’t buy it otherwise. If you like the “f” word on nearly every page and the “p” word for the female genitalia and dragging the “secret” on and on and on then you’ll love this book.
