Wild High and Tight The Life and Death of Billy Martin Peter Golenbock Books
The heading I wrote was relating to Billy Martin's greatness as a baseball strategist. It was not to imply that he was a great man. He was in fact a train wreck of a man as future readers of this book will come to realize upon reading this book. From the addiction to alcohol to his mistreatment of woman and those in his life this book is a fascinating insight into the chaos of Billy Martin's life. The ultimate pairing of this man and George Steinbrenner is the stuff of an unbelievable soap opera accept it was real. The early life narrative was necessary to build a foundation for cross reference later to understand some of Billy's behavior, I get that. However I found it was a bit to long winded and boring and could lead some to stop reading. I think if this was streamlined and not so long I would have felt the book would not have become tedious at that point. Just my opinion, Stick with the book though, when the book transitions into Billy's beginning years as a manager the book has you hooked. When Billy gets to his Yankee years the book throttles up and has you addicted and you can't put it down.Tags : Amazon.com: Wild, High and Tight: The Life and Death of Billy Martin (9780312105754): Peter Golenbock: Books,Peter Golenbock,Wild, High and Tight: The Life and Death of Billy Martin,St Martins Pr,0312105754,General,Baseball managers;United States;Biography.,Baseball;Biography.,1928-1989,BASEBALL,BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY General,Baseball managers,Biography,Biography & Autobiography,Biography Autobiography,BiographyAutobiography,General Adult,Martin, Billy,Martin, Billy,,Non-Fiction,United States
Wild High and Tight The Life and Death of Billy Martin Peter Golenbock Books Reviews
Bought this for my husband, a lifelong baseball fan. He really enjoyed the look back a Billy Martin's life and has sent
the book to friends. A real peek into a complex personality. A great find.
A very good rendition of Billys life, factual but laced with personal insights that leave you feeling for the man. Probably to idealistic and a touch naive to come through the Yankee system unscathed, regardless of George S.Real life got Billy in the end.
This is some of the worst writing I ever saw. As for the story, unless you're a diehard Yankee fan, forget it. It's a biography involving a number of people's lives. Not a single person to admire.
An amazing baseball epic told exceptionally well. The story, or at least parts of it, are familiar to us all. Where this book soars are filling in the gaps with the tale of a singular baseball entity who was as complex a personality as the great sport has ever known. Peter Golenbock deftly takes the reader on a journey, and it is one wild, fun, and hughly complicated ride. Highly recommended.
I am a longtime Yankees fan who remembers Billy Martin very well. I watched the pine tar incident live on television and that was his signature moment as a baseball manager in my biased opinion. For the personal insights from this book I am grateful. I recognized Billy was a tortured person but a great manager. Golenbock has fleshed out the biographical portion of Billy and seems to lay equal blame to Billy and his enablers George and then his wife Jill. I just wish Martin had sought help with his alcoholism. There is no wonder he remain a Yankees fan favorite; he was for us our Everyman.
OK...I am a baseball nut and huge Red Sox fan. I have always liked Billy Martin - especially as a manager. The book represents a fascinating excursion into a man selling his soul and his dignity to do what he always wanted to do - manage the Yankees. The relationship with Steinbrenner is classical love-hate and as far as George? Forget him. All the negatives on George are wrapped up in this book. The other item of interest is how Martin was bullied and manipulated by his fourth wife, Jill Martin. If even a fraction of her antics are true this woman i the ultimate bitch.
I lived through the Billy martin era and always liked him. I was pretty young when he played for the Yankees, but absolutely followed (and admired) him as the Yankees manager (over and over). Yes, I knew he was a drinker and yes, I remember the night he died, but I never knew all of the background of his personal (and a lot of his professional) life. What a tragic hero. If you're Billy fan, this is a must-read. My only negative on the book was the ponderous detail of the legal proceedings following his death, but that's a small negative. Also, the book was clearly written before Mantle's illness and death, which makes the book feel a little dated (and it is). How Golenbock came up with the amazing amount of details and behind-the-scenes events is really startling.....and how the Yankee players managed to perform in the Steinbrenner circus is a miracle. If you're a Yankee/Billy/ Baseball fan, read this one!
