I wanted to read something fun and entertaining during the long flight to the UK and decided to give The Pact by Jennifer Sturman a whirl. Even though this chick-lit mystery doesn't supply much in the department of great surprises, it did satisfy my need for a good read. More on that later. After a long string of loser boyfriends, five Harvard friends made a pact: to let each other know when they're dating a jerk. Rachel had no idea just how far their pact would go. When her friend Emma becomes engaged to Richard, the biggest jerk on the planet, Rachel and the others try to warn her off, but Emma is adamant about marrying Richard. When his body is found floating in Emma's parents' pool on the wedding day, no one knows what to expect. Is it possible that one of Emma's friends, in a desperate attempt to keep their pact, killed Richard? Or was it Peter, Richard's hot best friend, one Rachel has a major crush on.

This is an entertaining story starring Rachel as the narrator. Already you just know that she'll become an amateur sleuth for future novels. The pace is fast and never boring. You get a good dosage of chick-lit and mystery in this novel. It really is Agatha Christie meets Sex and the City (blurb by Meg Cabot). The world of blue-blooded types is done well, if a little stereotyped. The mystery aspect in itself isn't that shocking, but the execution supplies some plausible surprises without coming off as over the top, like the efforts of so many people attempting to write mysteries out there. The Pact is a great light read that you can enjoy during a flight or if you're spending day on the beach (if only!). Suspenseful chick-lit is an interesting new market, one that many authors are jumping into. Melissa Senate and Jennifer Weiner are only two examples of authors jumping on the mystery bandwagon. This, however, is written by someone who intends to make the genre her own. Sturman is a talented writer and I look forward to reading The Jinx and The Key.

The Pact Red Dress Ink Jennifer Sturman 9780373250790 Books Reviews

Ten years ago, four friends made a vow. They promised that they would save each other from any worthless man who crossed their path -- and they would do so by any means necessary. Who would have ever thought that this pact would come back to bite them in the butt?

Rachel - who is the narrator - and the girls are all trying to deal with the fact that their friend Emma is about to marry scum of the earth Richard. Although they all have qualms about her pending nuptials, they grin their teeth and bear it. So when Rachel wakes up early the day of the wedding to discover the groom's dead body afloat in the family's pool, no one seems the least bit upset. That is until Rachel comes to the realization that everyone in the house had a motive to kill.

I thought this was a great chick lit mystery novel. Rachel really had me going down the wrong paths of suspicion the whole way through and I was truly surprised at the end.

I will definitely be picking up Sturman's second installment, THE JINX, to see what craziness the gang will be up to next!
Rachel Benjamin is dreading watching her best friend Emma walk down the aisle with the vile and despicable Richard but despite the pact that she and her friends made long ago there is nothing that she can do to stop it. You see, years ago Rachel and her four friends made a pact to always let their girlfriends know if the person they are dating is...well, shall we say for lack of more appropriate wording, "wrong for them". And if the girlfriend in question does not heed their warnings they are to "take matters into their own hands". However, when Rachel finds Richard's corpse floating face down in Emma's family pool the morning of the impending nuptials, she cannot help but to wonder if one of her friends may have taken their little agreement too far.

Aside from the intriguing plot, one of the things that I enjoyed most about this lighthearted mystery was its strong and intelligent cast of characters. All of the women were smart and very successful and the men were all confident with out being overly aggressive. Which in turn makes it difficult for you to speculate on who could have committed such a crime when you are rooting for everyone to walk away from the incident with little to no repercussions. I thought that `THE PACT' was a smart, funny and well-written mystery that never took itself too seriously. I hope to see more of Rachel Benjamin and friends in the future, 4 ½ stars!!

Sidebar, for all of the reviewers who have commented on how conveniently diverse and multi-cultured the cast was, I hate to burst your bubble, but throwing in one Latina and women with a bunch of different hair colors does not a diverse cast make. -)
Well, I'm half way through this book and it's very interesting. It's an easy read and very enjoyable. I can't wait to get to the end!
Love this book! First in a series of mysteries that are chick-lit based. Really liked the writing, the characters, and will definitely read the rest of the series.
Call me young at heart, but I couldn't put this book down! Ms. Sturman cleverly woven tale takes the reader through many an unexpected turn. Quick dialogue and intriguing characters, made scene after scene, wittier than the last.

It is hard to believe this is a first novel--congrats, Ms. Sturman. You are off to a brilliant start!
About 7 years ago I was looking on Red Dress website (when there was one) and I remember reading about this book. I wanted to read it, but lost the page on the web site and could not remember the title. Recently I stumbled on this and nabbed it up. I did not like it. It's a bummer, but it's hard to believe that anyone would be concerned about solving a murder no one like. I couldn't get into it. I hope the writer has better ideas soon.
