I interviewed Erin for my Kill Your Darlings article, ‘We Read To Know We Are Not Alone Examining the Lack of LGBTQI Characters in Australian Youth Literature' (http//tinyurl.com/m25ljar)
She’s amazing, and this debut YA is a triumph I should know, because I was given an advanced copy … and I’d like to share with you the endorsement quote I wrote for the book
Erin Gough writes lightning on the page - her words leaving a resounding thunderclap in the heart! I wished so hard for 'The Flywheel' to be a real place, so I could go there and knock back caramel milkshakes with Del and Charlie while we waited for the Flamenco Hour. This reads like progress in Aussie YA diversity, a move away from coming-out stories to explorations of the perils and pleasures that come when you are finally true to yourself, but still dealing with the small-minds of others. I do think that the Australian youth literature community will embrace this tender-true story of girl meets girl, falling in love and finding your feet. I eagerly anticipate Gough’s next novel.
(see how I rambled there? That’s because it’s awesome and WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS!)
This is Del's story. With her father away on a much needed holiday she takes on the running of the cafe he owns called Flywheel. Del didn't expect the manager to be deported back to Ireland though and after a nasty encounter at school decides to run the cafe herself. She's also dealing with her friend Charlie. He is a bit on the fickle side when it comes to love which leads to serious consequences and puts Del in a position to consider what she is willing to do for others...and herself.
Great characters. Yes, even the minor ones are interesting. The protagonist, Del, is realistic in her manners and behaviour. Her crush on Rosa and her actions when she is around her are at times cringe-worthy but age-related. Charlie, well, he's just Charlie. The plot is good and the story does have a clear structure. There is a good sprinkling of humour and sarcasm that helps keep the story moving.
The ending was a little too neat (with one small exception). Some of the relationships that are formed don't make 100% sense - suddenly people are in love doesn't work for me and some age differences are a little odd in relationships given the way some characters behave (can't write more without giving the ending away). One scene was completely unnecessary and I feel really undermined Del and her sexual identity - the scene wasn't really necessary to the story.
It makes for an interesting read. It's not bad at all and will appeal to teenagers as a book with characters they can relate to.
Highly recommend this book. The writer engages with a diverse group of inner city teen characters. Delilah is the strong willed, gay protagonist who tries to run her dad's cafe while he's overseas.
