"Bridges are the most overt, powerful, and rational expression of man's ability to build" David Plowden wrote in The Spans of North America. Montgomery Schuyler opined a century before "our most durable monument-not a shrine, not a fortress, not a palace, but a bridge." FA Bausch makes a compelling case for their views. Featuring spectacular color photos of well known as well as nook and cranny bridges in North America, his text has an uncanny ability to capture the thrill of crossing them. Essentially a travelogue focused on bridges, he provides relevant technical/construction details while at the same time making a powerful case to visit the fascinating places these bridges take you to.

Bridges Crossed and some not A Pictorial Travelogue Mr F A Bausch 9780985351700 Books

Mr Bausch has captured the wonderful majesty of the many bridges covered in his book, many of which are first hand accounts of those he has seen throughout his travels. It is a well written, researched and an informative acccount of these beautifully engineeered structures. A great travel aid. The photos were especialy interesting.

I really enjoyed Frank's beautiful pictures in the book. I will probably buy the book for our brother-in-law and his bride.
Who would have thought a book about bridges could have been so interesting and informative. A fun read that is enhanced by super photos. A nice effort by the Notable Sandbagger.
Mr. Bausch knows his bridges. He has created an excellent reference/coffee table book. A good gift for someone who travels.
I didn't expect a book about bridges to be nearly so interesting, but this one is fascinating. Frank Bausch has carefully balanced his exhaustive research and "just enough detail" narratives with a wonderful set of images. Some of the pictures are primarily mechanical documentation in content, while others are images of great engineering achievements against breath-taking backdrops of some very challenging natural settings. I found myself searching the pages for bridges I've crossed myself, to find some history of each, and to see if I can recognize things from my own experience. Happily, I found plenty of them to reminisce with.

I think that, in the future, I won't be able to cross an interesting bridge without checking it out just as quick as I can get back to my own copy of Bausch's authoritative reference.
Bridges, it occurred to me as I read F.A. Bausch's just published "Bridges Crossed," cross more than space containing water. Bridges also span time by evoking times in one's life in which they played a role.
"Bridges Crossed" is a guide that transcends the utilitarian to evoke the nostalgic in 118 notable bridges in the United States of America accorded--after a brief but necessary orientation to the history and nature of bridges--an illustrated page each. The book will guide you to such bridges and tell you their stories; the rest is up to you and your experiences.
If space permitted I'd share what I mean with examples of "Bridges Crossed" bridges that transported me not just across bodies of water but to times of my life as, if you let them, bridges will and do.
Bridges can be personal. "Bridges Crossed" is a book for travelers whose motives range from wanting to see neat bridges and know their stories to those who know those bridges and appreciate the roles they played in their lives. It works for me, and it should work for you.
Author F.A. Bausch is a retired U.S. Navy captian under whom I served in the early 1970s. He crosses bridges from his home in South Carolina. I find it uncanny he's done for bridges something akin to what I have done for historic ranger stations in "Uncle Sam's Cabins A Visitor's Guide to Historic U.S. Forest Service Ranger Stations of the West" published in 1995, revised edition in 2012.

Les Joslin is a retired U.S. Navy commander, former U.S. Forest Service officer, and former college and university instructor who lives and writes in Bend, Oregon.
